| I have always loved babies. My mom said that before I was walking I was mothering my baby dolls. I have six younger siblings and loved loving them! I was raised on a farm and baby animals were a part of my nursery and my education in birth. I married my high school sweetheart and we lived in a log cabin in Colorado when I had my first two babies exactly two years apart. How cool is that! But both experiences were so so different. Both were hospital births but that is the only thing that was the same.
My first born, taught me how to start taking responsibility for my body, my choices, my life. My second born taught me that following my instincts and intuition was very rewarding, I was right! I could have a empowering, joyous, lovely birthing experience! And I wanted to yell from the roof tops! I wanted my sisters, my daughter, my friends and neighbors to know that birth was powerful but doable, even esctatic! My second born birthed me as a doula. I had my third baby at home in Southern California. Since then I have supported over 250 women during birth as a doula. I have come to believe that the most important things a doula brings to birth is her faith in woman's ability to birth, her faith in the birth process and a heart to hear what is said and what is unsaid. Two willing hands to serve are the next most important tools a doula has. Those things along with experience and knowledge about comfort measures and many many reference materials and people resources make for a well rounded birth doula.
